Now here is a cool idea for a semester-long art program: Cognitive Drawing is a 90 day workbook that guides students through a unique step by step process. It’s engaging, and we saw improvements right away.
We received our copy free in exchange for this review. It’s part of Timberdoodle’s 11th Grade Curriculum bundle, but read on to see why my eleven-year-old loved it!
Each day, the Cognitive Drawing workbook presents a comic book style instruction that’s both informative and fun to read (yay for hidden reading practice). It goes into topics like proportion, form and style and breaks down its unique method of drawing from memory.
My eleven-year-old, Mary, is our budding artiste. She was so excited to begin this program; she got her pencil out as soon as she got hold of the book. She’s only a couple weeks through, but she has made some significant advances in drawing already.
I love that this book binding allows it to lay flat. I love the comic book style directions that are so fun to read. The process itself is easy to understand and follow and the lessons are nice, short and to the point. The tone of the book is friendly and allows room to grow and fail. I think a lot of art books can be frustrating. Not this one; with each step you can compare your results and see that practice and mindful moments truly help you grow.
My kids are now all obsessed with drawing their own superhero comics. This workbook has launched them into hours of fun.
I think this would be a fantastic homeschool elective or fun addition to a human anatomy unit. I’d wholeheartedly recommend this workbook as an awesome gift for any art student you know (6+ and even adults).
