Fundamental Needs of Humans: Wool Field Trip

Life’s gotten crazy lately; I know I don’t have to tell you that. With everyone stuck at home lately corona-quarantining, how about we take a virtual field trip together?

Recently, we were very privileged to meet a local artist who keeps sheep for wool and weaves beautiful textiles.

What a fantastic opportunity to learn about some of the fundamental needs of man: clothing, protection from the elements and warmth. We talked about all the ways we use woven items like blankets, sweaters, scarves.

We fed the sheep and sat on her porch as she taught us about different weaving tools and materials, about carding, spinning and the loom. We even tried our hands at weaving too.

The kids were so focused and excited to try this out themselves. The sheep were so adorable. Watching the kids giggle as the sheep ate out of their palms and later the kids beaming with pride as they got the steps down on the loom was all pretty magical.

All in all, the visit was a wonderful way to add onto our fundamental needs of man studies.

Couldn’t ask for a better field trip.

The Interdependencies lesson has been uppermost in mind this past day!
