Gameschooling with SimplyFun: Ice Tumble

Looking for a cool game to test your spatial and fine motor skill — and steady hands?

We received Ice Tumble in exchange for our honest review, and honestly we loved this game. We played this together as a family at least a dozen times since the box arrived. The gameplay is simple to understand, but has two modes of play and two challenge levels. It’s a little like Tetris and Jenga in reverse.

First you much gather ice blocks by rolling the custom dice. Try not to disturb any piece but your own or you’ll be penalized and have to take an extra block. The game includes a sturdy mousepad-like mat to serve as the center of game play.

We prefered to stack our tower on our light table because the pieces glowed.

Pretty cool.

After all ice pieces are distributed, you must roll the dice again to see if you will take one or two pieces from your pile to stack in a tower — or steal a piece from another player.

It’s harder than it looks. To make the game more challenging you must balance the ice tower on a small disk. There’s two sized disks inside the box: larger for easier game play and smaller for a real challenge. If the tower tumbles, you get more blocks as a penalty and game play continues until someone finally runs out.

At the very end, once you run out of ice blocks, you must balance your arctic fox on top — based on an old folk legend — and you win.

Ice Tumble is a great family-friendly game for mixed ages. It’d be perfect played cozied up by the fire with hot chocolate or in a classroom tucked onto the shelf with a unit on the arctic. All in all, 5 stars for creativity, durability, and how much fun we had. In our experience, Simplyfun offers great quality games, and we look forward to adding more to our gameschooling collection.
