I’ve got a little, cautionary story for you. A couple of years back, my daughter’s occupational therapist witnessed my pen grip and about keeled over. Apparently I’ve been writing incorrectly for a very long time.
“Doesn’t that hurt your hand?” she asked.
“Well no,” I replied.
“Doesn’t your hand get tired?”
“Not that I’ve ever noticed,” I said smugly.
Later on that evening, I was congratulating myself for succeeding in life despite this blatant inadequacy when I realized, she may have an actual point. I have never been able to use crayons or mechanical pencils because I break every dang one. What if my grip has been to blame all along?
So as a good parent, I’m helping my kids learn from my mistakes. 🙂
I recently tried these Brilliant Beeswax Crayons from Timberdoodle, and they are proving to be a fantastic addition to our art materials.
- They’re solid, sturdy and don’t break from too much pressure making them a great first writing tool.
- They’re the perfect size for small hands, and they glide effortlessly with vivid color — they are a joy to use.
- The set offered by Timberdoodle comes with a sturdy case that I very much appreciate; so far they have all been restored to their home at the end of our work period. Very Montessori.
- They have a great chunky, triangular shape that is like a built-in guide for proper grip; plus they won’t roll off of tables.
- I also love that because they’re beeswax, they’re natural and sustainable. Gotta love bees!
Here’re a couple of the activities my kids utilized the Brilliant Beeswax Crayons for this past week:
Mary has been working on a lot of North American geography flag work. The colors glide on so smartly, she was able to accomplish a lot of coloring.
We also have been learning about the Amish culture.

I’m really in love with these brilliant, smooth colors. I’m so glad we tried them out!
