What is practical life? Practical life work means practicing everyday life skills. This week we honed our baking skills. Baking with kids can be a lot of fun. They are so much more capable than we think. They pulled off this cake to celebrate Maria Montessori’s birthday with almost no help from me whatsoever. I operated the machines (oven and mixer), and that was about it.
I found the recipe via How We Montessori. Kylie recently shared a series of kid-friendly recipes (think we will try them all). I knew we’d start off with chocolate cake. The recipe is originally by Happiness Is Here, and it’s delicious. The only tweak I made was to add leavening agents (about a teaspoon of baking powder and half a teaspoon of baking soda) to help it rise.

Always so proud of my kids. That may not look like much, but that took a lot of practical life skills and patience to pull off. We polished off every bit.

I found some beautiful biography cards about Dr Montessori’s life. Hearing about her life and sequencing the cards were a wonderful addition to the celebration.
